The Gran Sasso is a mountain chain comprising the Corno Grande, Corno Piccolo and, separated by the Val Malone, the Pizzo d'Intermesoli.
The adjacent area to the immediate south is included in this area.
The area offers walks, via ferrata, scrambles, climbs, winter climbs and a ski area.
The Cicerone guide listed below is out of print, later guides to the region cover only walking. Italian guidebooks must undoubtedly exist.
Accommodation at Campo Imperatore or nearby refuges.
A caution that the tour of the Corno Grande described in the Cicerone guide (and here) is not the same as the traverse of the three summits of Corno Grande, which is a little harder and requires a rope for abseils or good downclimbing/route-finding on complex exposed loose ground.
There are some excellent harder climbs on the Corno Piccolo and mountaineering routes both winter and summer throughout the range. All less than 2 hours from Rome. EddieA - 25/Jul/13 |
