Plas y Brenin and The Manchester Climbing Centre recently unveiled an extensive partnership arrangement which will see MCC members extending their skills in a range of exclusive training courses delivered by the National Mountain Centre's highly skilled and experienced instructors.

Available only to Manchester Climbing Centre members, the new courses are tailored specifically for competent indoor climbers, helping them to gather the technique and confidence to take full advantage of the UK's mountains, cliffs and crags under their own steam.

Manchester Climbing Centre's Managing Director John Dunne has been closely involved with Plas y Brenin for many years, working with them on various high profile climbing projects including technique development porgrammes, technical photo shoots, retail staff training projects for key outdoor brands and of course the infamous John Dunne Masterclasses, which ran successfully at Plas y Brenin for several years.

John's longstanding relationship with the National Mountain Centre has been a key factor in the development of the partnership and the new courses.

On announcing the new partnership John Dunne commented:

"Our members are adventurous people, that's why they come to us rather than pounding away on a treadmill at their local gym. They are always looking for a new challenge and after spending so much time and effort training indoors there is an obvious progression for them to climb outdoors.

It's important that we focus on our core work at the Manchester Climbing Centre, which is why we needed a serious partner to deliver our outdoor climbing programme. As a brand leader like us Plas y Brenin are committed in the same way to maintaining high standards and equipping climbers with the skill and judgement to climb on their own in a safe and responsible way. It was clear from the start that we shared the same values as climbers as well as businesses."

The partnership launches this month with a series of courses including advanced scrambling, multi-pitch mountain skills, and guided classic routes. They have even added a family adventure sports week to the menu where members can bring along the kids to try out all kinds of exciting new activities in the mountains.

As a further development to the partnership Plas y Brenin's instructors have also scheduled several staff training events at the Manchester Climbing Centre where the impressive range of facilities including several 20 metre lead walls will provide an unrivalled platform for developing their staff coaching skills.

In a series of 'return fixtures' Manchester Climbing Centre's Staff will visit Plas y Brenin for a wide range of staff training activities, events and courses.

Speaking at the official launch of the new partnership Martin Doyle, PYB's Chief Executive said:

"At Plas y Brenin we take care to ensure everything we offer is of the highest possible standard. We had no hesitation in welcoming Manchester Climbing Centre as our partner in the North West of England. It was obvious they held the same commitment to high standards. Like us, they are climbers themselves with a keen sense of what is right for the sport. Between us we'll be able to help more people discover climbing and give them the opportunity to continue to develop in the sport."

This is great, but other walls already offer courses to help people make the transition from indoors to out. The Edinburgh International Climbing Arena and the Ice Factor both have a good range of courses ran by highly qualified staff. These are all open to none members as well. Is there anything different here? Do the Brenin already run courses similar?

Well they could send the details in as a news item/publicity blurb if they wished. I am sure UKC would like this sort of information sent them instead of people asking where they can go on this type of course. I know a Sheffield wall does the same. up to them to publicise it.

Perhaps the MCC needs the extra publicity to generate a bit of extra revenue, maybe the other walls don't?

Why did you post, now I fancy a pork pie? ;-) Seems a good tie up to me, and other walls can do the same i expect.

Let me explain what Outdoor Industry News is. Then it will be a little clearer. On the Gear page with used to have just Gear reviews. This was then changed and for a year or to we had Gear Reviews and Product News now Gear News. http://www.ukclimbing.com/gear/ The definition of Gear News is this and it is stated at the base of each entry: Gear News at UKClimbing.com present climbing and mountaineering equipment that will be of interest to UKClimbing.com's readers. They are not gear reviews. If you have experience of these products registered users at UKClimbing.com are welcome to add comments to the discussion thread. HOWEVER as we have grown many companies offering products and services wanted more than that - a different category where they could publicise what they are up to beyond just products. We also wanted a place where we could run articles about the outdoor industry. Hence Outdoor Industry News - it is relatively new. Now, as an advertiser at UKC you can upload as many Gear News entries as you like, you can also upload Outdoor Industry News - all through your advertiser admin pages. The Editors at UKC also run Outdoor Industry News that they research themselves. Jab Vacancies advertised through the Premier Posts system are also doubled up with OINews. e.g., http://www.ukclimbing.com/gear/news.php?id=1698 This is the system we have developed and it is evolving. Plas y Brenin and MCC both support UKC and we support them. So yes, of course many walls run outdoor courses introducing people to climbing outside. It isn't new or exclusive to MCC. What is new is the partnership between Plas y Brenin and MCC and they are publicising that partnership and this initiative at UKC. Cheers, Mick Ryan UKClimbing.com Advertising Manager and Senior Editor
