Plas y Brenin, the national mountain Centre

If you would like to develop a career in the outdoors, our new fast track training programme could provide the ideal launch pad.

Over an intensive four-month training period you will work towards a clutch of National Governing Body Awards, gathering a huge amount of experience and developing your personal skills.

What is more, when you leave you will take with you the respect and recognition that comes with having been trained at the National Mountain Centre.

Rubbing shoulders with the instructors, you will stay in on-site accommodation seven days a week at Plas y Brenin, even though your course only runs Monday to Friday. That way you will be free to either join in with other courses taking place at the weekends or simply go climbing or paddling with your new-found friends at the National Mountain Centre.

What is more, you will enjoy three hearty meals a day, overlooking Snowdon in our scenic dining room.

This course is also ideal for anyone who is either taking a career break or works in the outdoors industry overseas and would like to develop a rich awareness of UK legislation, structure and good practice.

As part of a personalised programme, you may complete the following:

  • Climbing Wall Award
  • Single Pitch Award
  • Walking Group Leader Award
  • Mountain Leader Summer
  • UKCC Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Orienteering
  • REC First Aid at Work
  • BCU/UKCC Level 1 Certificate
  • MBLA Trail Cycle Leader
  • attend our Expedition Leadership Training Modules

For those with a greater range of experience, and perhaps some of the above qualifications, it may be possible to work towards or complete some of the following: ML Winter, IML training, MIA training, BCU/UKCC Level 2 Certificate, BCU WW Safety and Rescue, and REC First Aid Trainer.

This sounds perfect. Gotta move out soon, been made redundant, already registered for my SPA, would love a job in the outdoors... Shame I haven't got the £10k :o( I am very interested to know what sort of money can be earned and the career routes that people have taken into the outdoor industry though. Self-employed, schools, centres, etc? Maybe UKC could do an article on it?

Money?!! Don't be silly! Seriously, if you go freelance you can do well if you get enough clients, but it's not an industry to be in if money is your objective. I love it, I always say I have the best job in the world, but I'm always skint!!

o) I registered for my SPA just before I got made redundant. I was looking for a change. Putting a business plan together for £10k + other start-up costs isn't easy though. I'm not new to being self-employed so know what that's all about, and would love to be self-employed again if I'm honest. How did you start out? Did you work for someone else first, was it a complete career change, or something you worked towards at college etc? Thanks, Martin
