The Climbing Centre Group is proud to welcome Team GB coach Ian Dunn on board as our head climbing coach.  Working across at the Manchester, Harrogate and Reading Climbing Centres, Ian will plan and implement training courses, and oversee their development and delivery by our staff.

Ian DunnWith over 40 years of climbing under his belt, and years of experience coaching team GB’s junior members, Ian is ideally placed to support Climbing Centres Group (CCG) staff in delivering targeted coaching to our customers.

Ian and CCG staff will work closely together to design training plans suitable for all standards and ages of climber – whether you’re chasing your first 5+, or pushing 8a, there’ll be a plan in place to help you progress.  As well as providing training plans for customers to work from, Ian will be available for personal coaching sessions if you need a more hands-on approach.

Ian is currently Team Coach for the GB junior team; 2013 has seen Team GB achieve their best ever results, so Ian’s training plans are certainly working!

With a climbing career spanning the globe, including over 100 first ascents in the UK, Ian has the experience to back up his coaching.  He climbed his first 8a back in 1989, and considers Revelations (8b) at Raven Tor to be his hardest ascent. Ian is still training and climbing hard today.

From 1983-86, Ian was the British Mountaineering Council’s Technical Officer, and has served a number of BMC specialist committees for many years. As a member of the Training and Youth Committee, he was instrumental in establishing the BMC’s National and Regional Academies for talented young climbers. He is also a provider of the BMC’s FUNdamentals of Climbing and Physical Training Workshops and is a provider of the Mountain Training Coaching Awards.

Ian was also on the working group of The Association of British Climbing Walls that established the National Indoor Climbing Accreditation Scheme (NICAS) a five level structure for teaching climbing skills.

Extremely passionate about coaching, Ian loves to see all climbers both young and old achieving their full potential.

Good luck! You'll not remember me but you were always very encouraging when I was bumbling around in the early 1990s, trying to make sense of sport climbing. Some good beta and wise words. Thanks. Mick
