Wild Country & the Wideboyz at SHAFF

© Wild Country

Wild Country climbers feature in some of the biggest movies at this years SHAFF festival including two world premieres of climbing movies that are anything but straightforward - though both are exciting and poignant peeks into the world of the pro-climber.

And possibly the main event is the much awaited Wideboyz 2....where Paul Diffley and the Wideboyz follow the success of their 2013 offering with another superb movie...

Wideboyz 2 - Slender Gentlemen - World Premiere - Friday 4th April 7.30pm
Premiere of the sequel to Wide Boyz, directed by Paul Diffley and Chris Prescott at Edinburgh based Hotaches.

Following Sheffield climbers Tom Randall and Pete Whittaker the movie revolves around two questions: how did Tom and Pete cope with their new found fame after their ascent of the amazing Century Crack; and how did they move their climbing on from being known as the "weirdos who squeeze into spaces climbers shouldn't" to more recognisable activities. The film follows their quest to move on from Century and send some of the hardest cracks around including the 8C graded single pitch crack 'The Cobra' in Squamish Canada.

Wide Boyz scooped the top two spots in the SHAFF Best Climbing Film category last year for the long and short edit. Wideboyz 2 will also be repeated in the Climb 1 movie selection showing on Sat 5th 4.30pm and Sun 6th 7pm

+ Wideboyz 2 Lecture - Sat 5th 7.30pm
Following the second showing of the movie Pete and Tom offer their thoughts on what it took to slim from the widest cracks in the world to the thinnest! Tom and Pete will take you on a tour of the world's hardest from England, to Italy, to Sweden and finally Canada.  Their lecture will let you into their secrets, motivations and stories encountered along the way to the final showdown in Canada.

Our next big film features the globetrotting pair of Caroline and James Pearson....

Zembrocal World Premiere - Film and Lecture - Sat 5th April 2pm
Zembrocal is showing as part of our lecture by climbers Caroline Ciavaldini and James Pearson.
Last year Caroline returned to Reunion Island in the middle of Indian Ocean - her childhood home where she learnt to climb - with her fellow  athletes James and Sam Elias, Yuji Hirayama and Jacopo Larcher to climb 'Zembrocal', a new multi pitch, basalt route.  One of the most accomplished competition climbers in the world, after retiring from competition Caroline focused on trad climbing and alpine multi-pitch.  (PS The name Zembrocal refers to a famous Creole dish made from mixed varied ingredients that still maintain their original identities).

Our final film is a bit more lighthearted and sees the Wideboyz on a relaxing trip to Poland...or so they think...

Wideboyzski - Fri 4 April 7pm | Sun 6th April 6.30pm in Climb 3.
On a slightly lighter note, the Wide Boyz', Peak District climbers Pete Whittaker and Tom Randall head to Poland and the Czech Republic to test their skills on the region's beautiful and impressive sandstone towers.  The only snag?  Local climbing ethics mean metal protection and chalk are out.  Pete and Tom have to get their heads round the art of using knotted ropes on some seriously strung out pitches....

Finally there's a chance for you to put yourself in their shoes and see just how tricky crack climbing really is...

The Crack Machine
The legendary Wild Country Crack Machine will be in place over the weekend - so if you're inspired by the Wideboyz' antics you can test yourself on our new Crack Machine, which features three widths of crack - fingers hands and offwidth - in one fiendish device...we'll also have signed poster of Tom and Pete to give away at out stand in the main hall!!

You can book tickets for the movies and lecture here:

And our film of Tom and Pete's lecture at last year's SHAFF experts gives you a quick taste of their lecture style...
