Take a big red specially converted climbing expedition vehicle...

Add 20-25 climbers from all over the world.

Head off around the globe.

Stop off at the best established climbing areas in

Africa, South America or Asia.

Develop new crags as we pass.

And be part of local cultures everywhere we go.

That's Hot Rock.

I love him. I hate him. I miss him when I'm away from him. I take him for granted when we're together. I threaten to leave him when things get rough. I somehow believe that every time he disappoints me, it'll be the last time. I have amazing nights with him. I go on long scenic drives with him. He carries my bags and gear without complaint. He's complicated, rugged, and well-traveled. My new lover? No - Ernie the truck.”

Halfway into my stint on Hot Rock Expeditions, I was in a relationship. With a truck. And I admitted it on Facebook with that status update. No one back home understood. No one back home could understand. But when I signed up for Hot Rock, I joined a community of climbers and travelers who do understand. And revel in it.

It goes without saying that I climbed at far-flung crags you only read about in magazines. That I ate delicious local foods and visited famous tourist sites. I also played DJ for epic dance parties and perfected the art of cooking porridge for fifteen people. I made life-long friends and now have climbing partners around the globe.

And, yes, I became co-dependent with a fourteen-ton truck painted circus red. Happily so.
