Hamer brothers to head in every direction for the Great British Climb Off

Climbers Sam and Ed Hamer have set off on an extended road trip around the British Isles.  Over two months, they are planning to complete as many classic rock climbing routes as they can manage in an adventure that they have named the Great British Climb Off, which is being supported by Berghaus.

Brothers Sam Hamer (25) and Ed Hamer (23) have been climbing together since they were young children.  Born in Africa, they moved to the UK in 2001 and have been ticking off routes throughout the country ever since.  During the Great British Climb Off, the Hamers will focus on routes from the classic book Extreme Rock.  They also hope to complete others nearby that are less well known than those featured in the book, and they are aiming to visit 24 climbing locations in the British Isles.

Sam Hamer comments:
“It’s long been an ambition of mine to make a single tour of all of our islands and to climb at some of our best venues.  We will chase the good weather and head south to start off, then travel all points of the compass in England, Wales and Scotland, and finally across to Ireland.

“Extreme Rock has been an inspiration to my climbing and has driven me to push myself on as many of these extraordinary routes as possible.  It’s a breath-taking, iconic list.  We will also attempt some of the less travelled, but no less remarkable adjacent routes and test ourselves on the harder lines as well.”

The Hamers set off last weekend.  They will travel and sleep in a van and hope to complete the Great British Climb Off by the end of August.  The weather will be a factor in how well the brothers progress, particularly on the higher mountain crags, so they plan to be flexible with their intended destinations and timings.

During the trip, the Hamers will be taking over Berghaus’ Instagram account (@BerghausOfficial) for a month and using Twitter (@SamHamer6) to share news of their immediate plans and whereabouts.  Berghaus will also provide regular updates on their progress via Twitter (@TheRealBerghaus) and on its Facebook page.

Scotland: The Cobbler and Dumbarton Rock
Northumberland: Great Wanney
Lake District: Langdale, Borrowdale and Scafell
Yorkshire Dales: Gordale and Kilnsey
North Wales: Great Orme, Llanberis, Cloggy, Tremadoc and Anglesey
Cornwall: Lower Sharpnose, Sennen, Bosigran and Pentire
Dorset: Anstey’s Cove, Berry Head and Swanage
South Wales: Pembrokeshire
Ireland: The Burren, Fairhead and the Mountains of Mourne.

The Burren might take objection to being annexed for inclusion in a Great British Climb off ;-) Looks like a great trip though!

Even though the road trip is called "The Great British Climb Off", the actual challenge is: to visit 24 climbing locations in the British Isles.

2 months to visit 24 crags around the UK & Ireland, on an all expense paid Berghaus jolly doesn't really sound like much of a challenge (or news) tbh. More like a sweet holiday/roadtrip IMO Best of luck to them though. Im probably just jealous :)

Can we have Baggy Point back off Cornwall as well, they have enough climbing as it is! :)
