Berghaus has signed a deal with the British Mountaineering Council (BMC) to sponsor the Great British Climbing Team for two years. The North East based brand, which is celebrating its 50th birthday this year, will provide clothing for the 75 climbers in the senior and junior teams when they compete in regional, national and international events.
The GB Climbing Team consists of 30 girls/women and 45 boys/men, with a mixture of boulderers, lead climbers, ice climbers and paraclimbers. In 2015, team members competed in 26 international events as well as numerous national events. As well as being the sole supplier of upper body clothing to wear during competitions, Berghaus will have a presence at the UK events and work with the BMC throughout the year to promote the team.
Berghaus athlete and BMC ambassador Molly Thompson-Smith is a leading member of the team and comments: “The GB Climbing Team is really important for our sport. The team gives young climbers great opportunities to compete all over the world and is playing a key role in the ongoing campaign to add climbing to the Olympics programme.
“Just as crucial is the work that the BMC does with the team to build the profile and reputation of climbing among the general public, encouraging the next generation to head to their nearest wall or contact a local club.”
Dave Turnbull, chief executive of the BMC, adds: “We’re delighted that Berghaus has agreed to sponsor the GB Climbing Team. The 50 year heritage of the brand is rooted in the grass roots of climbing and the outdoors and the BMC has a history of working with Berghaus going back to the early 1990s. It’s great that one of the country’s leading outdoor gear companies is supporting the national team in this way.”
Members of the GB Climbing Team will wear their new Berghaus kit for the first time during the BMC Open Youth Bouldering Competition, at the Depot in Manchester, on Sunday
6 March. Molly Thompson-Smith and Berghaus staff will be attending, and the climbers will be available for photographs and interviews. For more information about the event, visit https://www.thebmc.co.uk/openyouth
