57 Years of Lake District Climbing and Walking Heritage Is Coming to Milton Keynes!

The Climbers Shop will open its doors on the 5th March and join a wealth of independent specialty shops of Stony Stratford. This will see the return of a true outdoor equipment specialist to the High Street to supply the growing number of climbers, mountaineers, hillwalkers, ultra runners and adventure travellers in Milton Keynes and the Home Counties area.

The Climbers Shop was the very first outdoor equipment shop to open in Ambleside, The Lake District, way back in 1959 when the founder, Frank Davis, decided that he would open a specialist shop to sell the walking and mountaineering gear he needed for his expeditions.  For over half a century The Climbers Shop remains in the centre of Ambleside and is a focal point for many climbers, walkers and holidaymakers wanting the very best outdoor equipment and advice.

Now, the current owners of The Climbers Shop are returning to their roots and bringing 57 years of heritage and expertise back to Milton Keynes which was, ironically, key to their own involvement in rock climbing and mountaineering.

Director Paul Casey grew up in Milton Keynes and got involved in rock climbing through school trips with Stantonbury Campus to the Peak District, the Lake District, Scotland, the French Alps and the Himalayas. Fellow Director Cathy Casey (Gibbins at the time) grew up in Bletchley and became involved in climbing through joining the Duke of Edinburghs Award Scheme while attending Leon School and went on to complete Mountainous Activity Courses while part of 2366 Bletchley squadron of the Air Training Corps. Cathy then went on to Instruct at Outdoor Centres across the UK before returning to Milton Keynes to work at the Outdoor Shop on Stony Stratford High Street. Paul, meanwhile had worked in different industries before taking up a post as Manager of the iconic Stony Stratford shop which was where they met in 1992.

Both Paul and Cathy have since climbed all over the world while working in the outdoor industry at all levels including manufacturing and distribution before taking over their first retail stores in 2005. The Climbers Shop Milton Keynes will be their fourth specialist outlet, joining their Ambleside shop and two iconic shops in Snowdonia which trade under the name Joe Brown.

Paul and Cathy along with fellow Director Gill Barnicott head up an expert staff team who are happy to share their experience and knowledge advising customers on the right gear to suit their individual needs and circumstances. There are experts on staff in every type of mountain activity from mountaineering to rock climbing, fell running, backpacking to expeditions and every variant in between. Whatever way you choose to enjoy the outdoors and at whatever level, you will find a warm, knowledgeable welcome at any of their stores backed up with a huge choice of equipment and exceptionally high level of custome service before, during and after your purchase.

Fantastic! I used to love going to the Outdoor Shop in my yuth (from Northampton) and bought nearly all of my gear there. Great to see a decent shop back there after the Outdoor Shop's demise.
