Questions you should ask before you go to a wall, either to climb or (parents) supervise/help someone to climb

How you ask these is up to you - but the options are:

(a) on the Web (and how about trying at this location?)
(b) on the phone (which is usually easy enough)
(c) at the front desk when you arrive (which can lead to disappointment)

So anyway.

  • You should find out when the wall is open. Sounds obvious, but so many people don't, and turn up on Bank Holidays when it's shut, or make a similar mistake.
  • Next thing to find out: how much does it cost *today* for the person who wants to climb? If they're under 16, or unemployed, or a student, or an OAP (and why not?) then there may be a discount against the usual rate.
  • Do they hire equipment that you need - select from boots, harnesses, ropes, belay devices, quickdraws, chalkbags. Is there a shop attached where you might be able to buy such things if you wanted?
  • If there is a leading wall, are the quickdraws in situ or would you have to bring your own? If so, how many?
  • If you want to go bouldering, are there special rates?
  • If you are a non-climbing parent taking a child who wants to climb, what sort of provision is there for teaching? Are the people who will do it SPSA-qualified? ("SPSA" is the standard qualification that indicates that someone can teach a willing group how to be safe indoors or outdoors.) And how does it cost, and is that by the hour or per entire session? What times is that available?
  • And finally, is there a cafe?

By this time they may be a bit sick of you. But you don't have to admit it was you on the phone when you turn up.
