Born in the UK in 1961, and married to Jackie with two daughters Beth (19yrs.) and Lottie (15yrs.), I am lucky enough to have enjoyed two very diverse and contrasting careers, the first as a businessman, the second as a professional expedition mountaineer, involved in the world of extreme climbing, over a 30-year period. The third major element to my life is Diabetes. I was diagnosed as a Type 1 insulin-dependent diabetic on January 31st 2001. I have been determined not to let diabetes stop my active outdoor, family and business lives but have used my diagnosis as a motivator; in 2003 I set up AlpBase.com offering chalet accommodation and multi-activity school courses in the Southern French Alps. Each year I organise extreme insulin challenges to raise monies for my charity Action4Diabetics.org (A4D) to help young people with diabetes in emerging countries across SE Asia. Since 2004 I have organised workshops and diabetic camps to support the global diabetic community. I was nominated a Blue Circle Champion by The International Diabetes Federation in 2015. There are 15 such champions in the World. The list includes Sir Steve Redgrave CBE. And finally, I set up The AlpBase Academy in 2007 together with my co-director Rob Benton. We offer multi-activity alpine courses year-round, for schools and colleges across Europe, including Eton College and St Paul's School.

In terms of climbing I love all disciplines, from Bouldering to Big Wall. I crossed the Iceland Icecap in 1977 when I was 16, summitted Mont Blanc at 17 and climbed a 7000-meter giant Manaslu North in the Himalayas at 22. After leaving school I worked as the Mountain Co-ordinator for Alberta Province, the aim of which was to climb the 75 classic peaks of the Alberta Rockies. Then a Short Service Commission in the Royal Marines, spending three winters developing major ice climbing areas in Arctic Norway, as well as succeeding on military expeditions to the Nepalese and Indian Himalaya. I was awarded the Commandant General’s personal commendation - the most outstanding Royal Marine - in 1984 for the rescue of Norwegian civilians. I have climbed abroad on an expedition every year since 1977 including remote mountain ranges in the Alps, Himalaya, South and North America, the Arctic, Central Asia and Patagonia.
EXTREME ALTITUDE - 7 Routes above 6,000M. - All Himalayan countries – all without supplementary oxygen.
EXTREME BIG WALL – 20 new Big Wall routes Worldwide: Madagascar, Baffin Island, Patagonia, Borneo, Pakistan, Bugaboos, Alaska, European Alps, Greenland, Norway, Russian Pamir’s, and Yosemite.
EXTREME ALPINE - 85 alpine routes including 16 First Ascents Worldwide! European Alps, Canadian Rockies, Peruvian Andes, Chile, Argentina, Nepal and India Himalayas, and Southern Greenland. He has climbed on expeditions with the World’s best including Mark Synnott, Silvo Karo, Kenton Cool, Al Hinkes, Ian Parnell, Mick Fowler, Sir Chris Bonington and Sir Robin Knox-Johnston. I have been exposed to all the various types of Big Wall experiences, from fast lightweight ascents to direct lightning strikes, through to opening whole new Big Wall playgrounds.

And finally, my philosophy on life. There are no simple answers, but for me, other than maintaining a 6 pack for as long as you possibly can, it is about staying positive and creating the best life you can for yourself, your family, your close friends and if you have the energy, for specific groups of people. Being a Type 1 Diabetic I try to help and inspire others with Diabetes through my insulin challenges and presentations. I am also the co-founder of Action4Diabetics.org (A4D). We help by providing life-giving medical care and essential support for young people with Type 1 Diabetes in emerging countries across SE Asia.
My other firm belief is to live your life to the max. Because the future IS simple: "Life's journey is NOT to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, but to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting yeehaaa!, what a ride".
Do it people. You only have 1 life.
