I bimbled about on rock for a number of years before reaching 42 and deciding that it was about time I started climbing "properly" before it got too late. Having decked earlier this year and fracturing my heel I have scaled back my ambitions from reaching the early E-grades to the old Colin Kirkus quote "You know, Alf, going to the right place, at the right time, with the right people is all that really matters. What one does is purely incidental". I respect and admire those climbers pushing their limits and climbing hard...but for me I climb for the sheer fun of it. I seem to have the most fun climbing up to VS and leading a little lower than that. Mountaineering with a mixture of approach walk, scrambling and climbing to a summit seems to suit my idea of a good day out the best.

Location
Poole, Dorset

Best Climbing Experience
Striding Edge when I was 17. It wasn't really climbing, but it was my introduction to the mountains and one that I've never forgotten.
Idwal. My first multi-pitch, with lunch on a grass terrace and a scramble down that, at the time, worried me more than the climbing!
Cuillin. Never made it up onto the ridge as I re-fractured a bone in my heel on the approach that I had apparently fractured several months earlier falling off and decking in Dartmoor (no wonder it was hurting all that time!!). But it ignited an ambition to do the Traverse and to explore the mountains of Scotland.
