* Premier Post - BMC Online survey: Head injury & helmets

* by - Dan Middleton, BMC ? on - 04 Sep 2007
Ever had an impact to the head whilst climbing?

Whether you walked away unhurt, or ended up in hospital, we want to hear from you.

Our new online survey only takes a minute or two to complete.

The results will be used to inform future BMC thinking on helmet standards and design, and the advice we give to climbers.

In reply to Dan Middleton, BMC:
I tried to help with the survey but the questions are too simplistic - i.e. only one answer can be chosen when the truth would be more than one.
So I gave up.
I suggest a re-think of how to ask qs to gather info.

In reply to Ross McGibbon: The idea is to get the answers I need, and to keep it as quick and simple as possible so people fill it in. I have to go for simple, single responses for statistical reasons.

If you want to elaborate, email me or use the comments box, which is open ended. So far over a hundred completed surveys in 1 week, which is more than 4 times the data collected from other sources in over 10 years. Keep it going folks.

In reply to Dan Middleton, BMC:
Afraid I couldn't get to the comments box as I had to answer just one place to 'where was your head hit'. Not wanting to give you duff info, I could get no further.
Hope your survey ends up being some use. It does seem that how you ask the questions will give overly simplistic answers and, maybe, unsympathetic helmet design.

Best of luck

Ross

In reply to Ross McGibbon: Thanks for the feedback Ross. In some ways you are correct, however I have some very specific questions to answer (read the feature article for more details) hence the very simple survey. For multiple impacts record the most significant in the survey, and then include further details in the comments box. So far lots of people have done the survey and reported their experiences, which have never been collected in one place before.

In reply to Dan Middleton, BMC:

Can you fill it in on other's behalf? I've seen one top impact (helmet less, geyser resulting) and one side impact (took a chunk out of my meteor)

Yes. I can't stop you anyway as its an open survey! The survey relies on trust in answering the questions truthfully. If you can answer them based on definite evidence as opposed to hearsay, I don't see a problem with reporting an incident which happened to somebody other than yourself.

In reply to Dan Middleton, BMC:

Dan i know that this is irrelevant to head injuries but as you work for the BMC do you please know if doping procedures exist in the BBC (british bouldering championships) or BLCC (british lead climbing championships) as i have need information on this procedure for a college PE piece of coursework.
Please reply even if you don't know.
Thanks alot.
