/ recommendations 1st disc brake mb
I am looking at getting a bike with disc brakes but need a little help or some recommendations.
I am also torn between hardtail/ full suspension.
I want a bike for medium length routes(up to 4 hours) & suitable for use on purpose built red/black trails.
Maximum budget £1,000 but would be happier to spend £5-600 if I am not going to gain much more for the extra £400/500.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Have a look at some of the bikes here...
For £500 http://www.decathlon.co.uk/81-2012-id_8168918.html is a good bet.
(Or go 2nd hand)
A grand will buy you a pretty good hard tail but a compromised full susser. It's something of a truism but you will learn more about bike handling by sticking with a hard tail. Less to go wrong too and more versatile.
It's really hard to go wrong with the big names, trek, specialised, giant etc. Also Boardman are getting good reviews.
Although the normal advice is to make your choice on the quality of the frame and wheels a poor fork can really wreck a bike at the price points you are talking about and be expensive to replace.
Thanks guys. Its all helpful stuff
What frame/forks have you got now? - I upgraded a frame with v-brakes with a decent secondhand wheelset and new forks/brakes for a lot less than your budget.
If you get decent components, if you upgrade to another frame they can be transferred.
Has anyone got experience of this site? Presume you take the same precautions as Gumtree?
Thats an idea.
I m riding a cheapo full suspension rockrider which I got second-hand which I actually quite like.
just fed up with having to adjust/ replace brake blocks after almost every session
The 2012 Marin range doesn't look too badly specced for the price http://www.marin.co.uk/2012/bikepage.php?ModNo=12BT.
I've got a 2008 Northside Trail & it's bomb-proof, despite my clumsy riding style & many unwitting attempts to destroy it.
If I had £1000 to spend on a new bike right now it would be this - I cant believe the spec for the money.
Go 29, you wont regret it :)
Forgot to mention, have a look in the for sale section of the Singletrackworld forums. If you dont know it, its the mountain bike communities equivalent of UKC.
