A very good read indeed.

In reply to manumartin: Everest is so expensive now that most climbers seeking adventure are attracted to other peaks. Perhaps the time has come to abandon Everest to the 'adventurers' and ocean rowers and marathon runners. I write this mournfully because commercialising great institutions and achievements has ruined each equally. Wimbledon and the Five Nations amongst countless other great arenas have been destroyed by greed and false glory. Greatness is measured now in numbers not determination, tenacity and talent.

I accept and support the sherpas right to work and improve their personal comfort and the lives of their familes by dragging bankers up a dispoiled icon and I hope they can continue to do so but the climbing community must choose other objectives more in keeping with the true spirit of what we love. RIP Chomolungma, a victim of superficial vanity and the corrosive effect of money.
