Hi there, I will doing some of the GR10 and some of Haute Route in the above area starting June 1st. Wondering what the current snow levels are and will it really be necessary to take axe and crampons, hoping to do some peaks-Canigou_Carlit etc thanks,

In reply to goatee: Not been there personally in the recent past but French TV news a couple of days ago showed some scenes in the central Pyrenees which looked extremely snowy for the time of year - more like March than May and several cols which would normally be open to road traffic are still closed.

But Carlit is a lot further east so maybe different but http://france.meteofrance.com/france/montagne?MONTAGNE_PORTLET.path=montagneprevisionmassif%252FPYRE... suggests widespread snow above 2000m (click on Hauteur de neige hors piste)

In reply to goatee:

I can see the present conditions lasting well into June. The huge quantities of fresh snow that have fallen or are expected will make progress on foot pretty tough ! Perhaps it would be a good idea to draw up some alternatives ?

For a really good idea of what conditions to expect, you could contact the Club Alpin's Chalet-Refuge aux Bouillouses.

I've stayed there a few times-notably when skiing Carlit. Should have a 'gardien' by the end of the month.
