Dug out of the garage and looks about as old as my parents.

Couple of things:

1) Tell me something about it if you can
2) How do I get it going? No knobs, switches or 'owt. Just pump.

I'm trying to remember how these things work. My father had one & used to take it on picnics. (This was a bit pre RT picnics!!)

Meths in the ring at the top, & parrafin (sp) in the tank below. When the burner gets hot enough with the meths, then the parrafin starts to burn.

Just read this back & it makes little sense, but try it!!

In reply to Mark Wood:

So pump before lighting the priming meths, or afterwards?
Does it have to be paraffin? Couldn't I use petrol?
Mark Wood 31 Oct 2004
In reply to Alex Purser:

Petrol may not be a good idea!!

Let me ring my Pa, & I'll get back to you shortly.

Do you have a blast shield just in case?

If so then there is a small screw on top of the filler cap to release the pressure when you have finished cooking.

Unscrew the pump and see if it is dried out, if so apply some vaseline or similar to it, you may need a new washer if it is cracked. The makers still probably make them to fit, why change a proven design?

Fill the tank to 3/4 capacity with paraffin, put lid on but do not screw up pressure relief valve yet.

Put some meths or burning paste in the cup round the burner to preheat it, when it is nearly spent, close the pressure valve and give a a FEW pumps to see if it will fire up. If so, give another three or four pumps and leave for half a minute then pump till you have a fierce enough flame to boil water.

If it is too cold the stove will flare up, just release the valve and wait for it to warm up more.

And THAT is how it was in youir daddies day;-0

In reply to Alex Purser:

NOT PETROL, it is a paraffin stove. If you use petrol you will have a bomb when you release pressure. There were petrol models but I hated them as too dangerous for inexperienced people.

Beat me to it!!

Ah yes.
He's been telling me all about his days of cycle touring with his trusty stove...
Alex Purser 31 Oct 2004
Where can I get paraffin then?
Mark Wood 31 Oct 2004
In reply to Alex Purser:

Any decent hardware shop, & the odd petrol station.
Alex Purser 31 Oct 2004
In reply to Mark Wood:

She goes!

Had a tinker and it works fine. Even the pump was OK after all these years.

sutty: The link you sent earlier didn't open on my computer. Here's the stove in all it's glory though, on my patio.

DIY sheds sell it as Parasene Superwarm fuel. £5ish for 4 Litres.

White spirts and BBQ lighter fuel (the paraffin based stuff) will work too.
Alex Purser 31 Oct 2004
In reply to Stuart Robinson:

That's the stuff. Sold for greenhouse heaters.

Yep, the Parasene stuff is already 'low odour' paraffin, and they even sell a perfume to add to the fuel so it smells a bit like flowers ......

I have yet to try it, but I suspect that the Citronella Lamp oil, is really just a scented paraffin, so whilst your cooking your supper your trusty 210 could be smelling nice and getting rid of the midgies too.
