Was thinking, Climbers and walkers like to think they are in touch with nature etc and probably rather more friendly to the environment. But aren't we actually worse with our long raod journeys to crags and our cheap flights to go climbing?

yep were pretty bad compared to others who go on a package tour and drive a short distance to work. I do more miles that most people I work with. I wouldn't say i'm in tune with the world around me but that i'm in tune with myself more and I think other people I climb with think the same. I haven't got the first clue about nature and its pain ignorance (not that i'm doing much to change it)

In reply to The Sultan of Loch Quoich:

It's better to have a group interested in the well being of a piece of land than to have no group to stick up for it. Bits of land with interested users (be they walkers, farmers, hunter-gatherers or whatever) tend to be managed better than those bits of land with no-one interested in them.

It's in the users' self-interest to maintain the status-quo.
