I was in Jena, East Germany last week and it looks like the sort of place where there would be some great climbing. However, I couldn't find out any information about any local climbing scene due to my inadequate/ non-existent German lnaguage skills. Anybody know anything about climbing in the area?

Is that where the Carl Zeiss factory is? Near Dresden.

If so there's lots of brilliant sandsone climbing just south of Dresden along the River Elbe, toward czech rep.

Take the sbahn rail to the end of the line; German side of the river, cross over to the Czech side to Hrensko. Do not be alarmed if it looks like a Saigon street market. Walk up through the town and you find a Hudy Sport. You can buy cheap czech and east german guide book there.

Great thanks for that. Did you enjoy the climbing?

A bit trouser filling. No chalk allowed; no metal gear, just knotted slings; long runouts; the old steel ring bolts are too big for your average krab to clip; rock quality range from mostly solid to digestive biscuits...

Yes I did. Want a rematch.

ps Czech side near Sneznik is less stressful

Have a look at these
http://www.klettern-im-elbsandstein.de/
http://www.gipfelbuch.de/gebiete.htm

there are all in German but have some nice piccis.

The Elbsandstein gebirge is sandstone and they have a different approach to gear placing, i.e. they use knots

Also, there are a number of access restriction in terms of times when you can climb.

Have fun
