I have a question about Petzl Charlet Nitro Shock Absorber (http://www.rockrun.com/shop/prod.html?d=2&t=12&p=2341) : Has anyone used this as part of a via ferrata set? Is there anything else you can suggest as a shock absorber that doesn't involve me handing over hard-won cash to Petzl??

The energy absorbing capacity of that thing is not enough for via ferrata set. (ie it's not suitable for your use). I'd also like to note that sarabiners sold for via ferrata have special design, too. They are edge-proof which climbing biners are not.

This is how your set should look like:

Try the search facility at the top, you may find useful threads such as this one:

Hope thats of some use. You should be able to get the bits in Europe cheaper perhaps, or even hire them out there?

Cheers

In reply to adnix: I'm not saying that particular setup would be safe, however the latest peztl via ferrate lanyards do use a similar ripping sling for engery absorption http://tinyurl.com/a4eso
also via ferrata krabs are just regular krabs, just in general they are autolockers because of the number of times you unclip

Similar yes, but I suppose the stiching is different. Normal shock absorbers are designed to produce max 2,5kN and via ferrata standard gives 6kN. There's a big difference you know.

No they aren't normal karabiners. Check the standard:
