Bet I win... my arms are so long my knuckles drag along the ground!

how do you calibrate it?

In reply to Rosie A:

Karl Walton who posts on here has an ape index of +6, iirc.

Dear Rosie

One benefit you have is you don't have to spend all day filing your nails.

does that mean his arms are 6cm longer than his height?
Rosie A 23 Sep 2005
In reply to Norrie Muir: My fingers have worn down to the first knuckle.
 CJD 23 Sep 2005
In reply to Rosie A:

I thought it was inches.

he has to get some of his tops specially made.

"Wing-Span" - height(in inches)

I'm +4 by the way, its an advantage in reach but a disadvange in strength(longer levers make it more difficult to do one-armers and lock-offs)

In reply to Rosie A:

I'm about -1 or -2 - which when I'm only just 5'3" anyway is a really pain.

I'm defintiely built to climb!

My boyf is 6' and about +1 or +2... so unfair!
 Smitz 23 Sep 2005
In reply to Rosie A: Rich, Sam Orange's husband, has an APE index of 10+ (centimetres)
I did an informal study once at the Orange House, measuring guests' APE indexes and their highest onsight grade, and there was NO correlation. None whatsoever.

and every time he does I have to remind him of my +8 (inches) ape index - why do they make sleeves so short???
Rosie A 23 Sep 2005
In reply to Smitz: B*gger. i was hoping it made a difference! %¬(
Ian Hill 23 Sep 2005
In reply to Rosie A: it does if your head thinks it does

I have long arms so I CAN reach that hold...!
 Owen W-G 23 Sep 2005
In reply to Ian Hill:

I am 6' exactly, my span is 6'2". Does that make my A.I. 2"?
 CJD 23 Sep 2005
In reply to Ian Hill:

blimey! I know he's just got Pennine Outdoor (purveyors of outdoor-garment fabrics) to make him a fleece top with very long arms. Including fabric it cost £25. bargain!
 Mick Ward 23 Sep 2005
In reply to Rosie A:

Who's got the highest ape index? Gary Gibson. Believe!
 haze01 23 Sep 2005
In reply to Rosie A:
hmmm, interesting... i have no idea what mine is - its maybe not something thats easy to measure without a little help either

Might be a close run thing with Bentley
 Marc C 23 Sep 2005
In reply to Smitz: It's the Satyr index (penis length-to-body height ratio) that's important
karl walton 23 Sep 2005
In reply to Rosie A:
Yes it's true, Ian's is longer than mine!
Ian Hill 23 Sep 2005
In reply to karl walton: not something to shout in a crowded pub though...
karl walton 23 Sep 2005
In reply to Mick Ward:
Working from his height and his claim to be able to reach out the top move of Wings of Unreason.
I calculated his index to be at least +10".

OK I should get out more, which I intend to do right now as I'm late already.

Bye.

See you in the Vaynol ;*b
Rosie A 23 Sep 2005
In reply to karl walton: Speaking of armchair climbers, you made yourself late for a climbing trip by posting on here... tsk! (I've done that!)

What you do is you measure your height against a wall, then you put your arms side-e-ways so they span the height measurement... No that doesn't sound right.

Someone show her!

Rosie A 23 Sep 2005
In reply to Ian Hill: Me and my geezer have exactly the same ape index (and take the same size in clothes.... or at least the ones I've persuaded him to try on so far!)... so it really annoys me that he can reach holds I can't!
Rosie A 23 Sep 2005

It's not the size that counts.....

it's how big it is.

-17 and half a ford fiesta.
 Fidget 23 Sep 2005
In reply to Rosie A:

To measure - lie on floor with feet flat against wall, mark top of head. Stretch arms in same direction, mark tip of fingers. Measure the difference in inches.

Mine's +4.

In reply to cider nut:

is it weird to be grateful for having an ape index of O? spares me the callouses on the knuckles.

shirt sleeves are still generally not long enough though. bah.
Rosie A 23 Sep 2005
In reply to cider nut: You looked quite normal when we met. Must have had the sun in my eyes! %¬)

We have carried it on in your absence...and the results are still the same... :0)

I am +8...

Only in my heels...
Rosie A 24 Sep 2005
In reply to Robynbobbin: Checked your profile pic and now I believe it! Tell me you climb in them...
Robynbobbin 24 Sep 2005
In reply to Rosie A:

Don't need to climb in them, they make me tall enough to reach the top already! LOL.
Rosie A 24 Sep 2005

Robynbobbin 25 Sep 2005

What ARE you trying to say????
 Helen R 25 Sep 2005
In reply to Robynbobbin:

Oh no, oh no. -1 - that's not even trying!

-4.

Yes, -4. Inches.

I am obviously less apelike and more evolved than the rest of you :-P
 MeMeMe 25 Sep 2005
In reply to Helen R:

Hah.
It's all very well being more evolved but those knuckle scrapers will be able to mock you from the top of climbs when you are halfway up struggling to make a long reach.

I've got a perfectly normal, boring, +/-0 ape index, although I have a theory that if I try and think my arms longer they will start to grow again.
Ian Hill 25 Sep 2005
In reply to MeMeMe: sleep with your arms dangling over the side of the bed with heavy weights attached - it works!!
 MeMeMe 25 Sep 2005
In reply to Ian Hill:

Are you serious?
Don't you end up having crucifixion nightmares?!

Maybe I will try with some light weights and gradually work up.
