There is a possiblity that I may be going there at some point.

I've seen photos of huge clifs and the area looks stunning.

The questions are, is there any rock climbing?
what is a suitable guide book?
where's the best place to get OS style maps?

anything else I need to know?

cheers

In reply to halfaseesaw: There are some brilliant areas for climbing, however they are all REALLY spread over the county. Normally, this wouldnt be such a problem but Donegal is a BIG county. Try either SW (Skelpoonagh bay, Malin Beg, Muckross Head etc) or N (Dunmore Head - Culdaff, Port a Doris, Barnanmore etc). A good place to get guidebooks, maps etc is http://www.jackson-sports.com/ free postage to uk. Only 1:50000 maps available for Donegal unfortunately!

Out there recently. There is a Donegal guide that you can get in most good shops (got mine in Capel Curig!).
Gola Island a good place to visit - lots of nice granite single pitch stuff ferry across about 10 euro I think. Also climbed on Bingorm. Dont!

Be aware that it rains a lot in Donegal, and I mean a lot! Winter is likely to be very poor for climbing. A lot of the inland granite crags are very vegetated so take a long time to stop seeping.

Summer after a dry spell can be stunning and many of the coastal cliffs are climbable year-round.

Have a look at http://www.colmcilleclimbers.com/ for more info on the area. Pete Smith can be contacted via the website and is a helpful guy, always anxious to introduce new people to the joys of Donegal climbing.
