Of the estimated 82,315 visitors this month, only 1380 posted last week. Why do people read the forums and not post? Surely some have unanswered questions about climbing and gear, or the meaning of the universe, which could be answered on these forums?

(And how do UKC arrive at such an apparently random number as an estimate?)

Web-sites are on computers. Computers are good at logging statistics. One statistic will the number of visitors, who have probably viewed at least one thread.

Nick would probably be able to tell you the number of times this particular thread has been viewed, if he could be bothered. It will be recorded somewhere.

In reply to Rosie A:
That wont be individual visitors will it? Rather total visits...

But the forums do scare people from posting due to the "cliques" who turn on newbies and tear their online personas apart

Point us at one, most of them are kids messing about. They get ribbed sometimes when they ask about doing Mt Blanc for the thoird time in a week. Somehow they seem to all be dyslexic and also to have tossed it off when doing IT studies at school as they cannot do searches or write in some form of English the older less educated can read easily.

The cliques are all virtual anyway. If people wish to go on meets nobody has ever been told they cannot come. Everyone is welcome, be it the one cidernut is organising or the drinks meets some people publish on here.

If it's a statistic it could be logged in this way rather than as an estimate? Or maybe they give it as an estimate because of people with multiple personas.

Hardly, when considering the utter tripe and uninformed drivel output by the to 20 posters each week.

This is what probably puts off folk with serious questions
Rosie A 06 Nov 2005
In reply to kevin stephens: Most of the utter drivel is confined to the chat room though isn't it, and unless they have profiles they won't be able to access that. The other forums are generally fairly erudite aren't they?

4 top 10 posters on 1 thread! Wow, big league stuff here!
Rosie A 06 Nov 2005
In reply to kevin stephens: pssst... Don't keep posting, that's how you get into the top 10, Kevin.
 Steve Parker 06 Nov 2005

Rosie A 06 Nov 2005
In reply to kevin stephens: But we all have the opportunity to raise the tone of the forums by posting, should we so desire.

Isn't it a little voyeuristic to read and not post? Why not take a risk, set up a profile and contribute?

Rosie A 06 Nov 2005
In reply to Dominion: You should be on a fee, you spend ages sorting out people's computer problems. And you're always spot on with advice.

Which reminds me....
In reply to Rosie A:

It isn't a random number, it is the number of 'unique hosts' which visit the forums in a month. This has been discussed before and is the universally accepted method across the Internet of measuring visitors to sites. The figure itself is measureable exactly, which is why we have such a precise number. Whether it actually corresponds to separate real people visiting the site is a matter for debate but there as many people who regard it as an over estimate as there are as an under estimate.

Why this figure is so much higher than the number of people who actually post is not that surprising though. I suspect that most of us visit many sites with forums without actually posting. I think the 82,000 figure is more a testimony of the reach of UKC and how it crops up time and again on searches and people who have come to the site via Google searches are not so likely to post. This was very well illustrated by Stephen Reid's Haskett Smith thread which became the top Google hit for the word Haskett Smith within 2 weeks of being posted - http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en-us&q=Haskett+Smit... .

They may not even be looking at the forums - it's visitors to the SITE isn't it? There is rather more to UKClimbing than the forums.

So just to not be voyeuristic, how would you contribute to this thread....

utter drivel, idle chit chat, deep meaningful conversations and answers to life the universe and cam placements is what makes this forum what it is...

you have the choice to view a thread, post or not. You shouldnt point the finger for not posting because they same argument could be applied for those that do.

its just a wonderful mish mash of tripe and gold...

Make sure you have it with other food that has a lot of liquid with it, and fairly herby. Something like aubergines and courgettes, with chopped tomatoes, herbs and onions (with extra chopped tomato for extra liquid)

I quite often lurk without posting because I'm keeping an eye open for something that would interest me, for instance when I was looking for a new sleeping bag and day sack, I kept an eye on the for sale forum for a while... I also look out for people to climb with, but am a little shy about posting myself.

Ste Brom 06 Nov 2005
In reply to Rosie A: im inclined to believe that lurkers dont wish to enter the arena of the retarded. over the months ive come to believe that all persistent posters here are actually 15 yr old goths from arkansas with nowt going on in their lives other than their tawdry opinions and an inclination to rant over a particular topic that neither they or you care about apart from that strong desire to acheive the mythical status of 'top 40 poster' (read belmer with nowt to do). and should anyone attempt to join a thread, they are usually met with a tide of derision from other top 40 posters, or at least ignored. personally, i dont climb and never have, but i imagine the insularity of the climbing world is adequately reflected in this website and i genuinely do find your opinions at once entertaining and lame, all garnished with a healthy dose of middle class white snobbery that comes part and parcel with 'extreme' sports with initially expensive outlay costs.
 kevin stephens 06 Nov 2005
In reply to Ste Brom:

Ste

You are only partly right. Many of the top 40 posters are not really representative of the real UK climbing world, which is certainly not as insular as parts of this site may lead you to believe
 Steve Parker 06 Nov 2005
In reply to Ste Brom:

Strange. I find most people on here quite intelligent and quite welcoming. You do get the occasional superior critic who really does think their dazzling critique is something special, of course, but that's to be expected. I know loads of climbers in the 'real world', and I reckon the UKC top 40 is as representative a demographic cross section as you could hope to find. Maybe you just don't like climbers. Sorry if I'm being snobby or middle class, I was born on a back street in Liverpool and my Dad was unemployed for a lot of my childhood. That's my excuse anyway.
Ste Brom 06 Nov 2005
In reply to Steve Parker:

Of course I climb.

Yes Im from Liverpool.

And yes Im winding you up. Or trolled. Or whatever.

But you are right, I dont like climbers, tossers the lot of 'em!

Tongue firmly in cheek of course.

 Jason Kirk 06 Nov 2005
In reply to Ste Brom: I've only met one other person in the top 40 in the real world and she seemed pretty normal to me. As for middle white class snobbery I think you are seeing something that isn't there. Also if you're not a climber why are you here?
Ste Brom 06 Nov 2005
In reply to Jason Kirk:
Also if you're not a climber why are you here?

Is that the insularity I was talking about perchance?

 Jason Kirk 06 Nov 2005
In reply to Ste Brom: Stop trolling. This is a climbers forum for climbers to talk about climbing and whatever else takes their fancy. If you don't like it/us then please feel free to go away. We don't bite and it really is harmless fun you know.

Flippin 'eck, is it? Somehow I'd started to believe it was a pick-up joint for randy scots persons and Flossie!

<no offence is intended by this post, it is meant to be light-hearted and very, very tongue in cheek>
 Jason Kirk 06 Nov 2005

 Steve Parker 06 Nov 2005
In reply to Rosie A: I like being trolled. Trolling is GOOD! I'll get him back. I won't sleep until I get him back. I won't rest until he and his whole scouse brood have been trolled into the Mersey and have woken up surrounded by amorous Woollybacks in Hoylake. Damn, damn, damn!
Rosie A 06 Nov 2005
In reply to Jason Kirk: No worries, I'm waiting for Kevin Stevens to take up my offer of a climb. If he's not an elitist and insular extreme sportsman that is.

Me, I'll climb with anyone...

besides if you were in work on a sunday you'd want to brutally spank someone clockworkesque stylee, or at very least rile one of the 82,000 odd lurkers you mentioned into making a rash statement or two.

Not being sophisticated enough to pick up on her sexual innuendos, could you explain what she was trying to suggest?
