..........Those little mini keyring compasses that come in crackers and such, as real compasses.

I was playing with mine earlier on, and it gave me 4 different norths, none of them true, magnetic, or even grid north.

When used alongside my silva compass, the cheapo one pointed 20 degrees off. I then turned 90 degrees by my silva compass, the cheapo one pointed 230 degrees off north.

The silva keyring compasses seem to work fine, but then again, they are no doubt better made than the cheapo ones you get free with things, as well as being slightly bigger and so more usable.

I hope to god no-one uses a cracker compass out in the hills this christmas!!!

Ps. The Silva key ring compasses make a nice little stocking filler!!

In reply to smithy: Well you used 2 compasses side by side??

And how would a compass give you grid North?
OP smithy 11 Dec 2005
In reply to Iain Ridgway:

They don't, I was just pointing out that it got no way near north, not even grid north!!!

OP smithy 11 Dec 2005
In reply to Iain Ridgway:

And not side by side!!
Iain Ridgway 11 Dec 2005
In reply to smithy: But you wouldn't expect to compasses to work side by side would you? wouldn't they interfere with each other?
OP smithy 11 Dec 2005
In reply to Iain Ridgway:

That's partly why I didn't do it!!

In reply to smithy: What gets me is that you expected it to work!!! These things are mass produced in China and have probably never even seen a magnet!!!

Thats why mine from last year is pointing east.
OP smithy 11 Dec 2005
In reply to link:

Haha!! Mine points east when you pick it up!!

But when you turn around it doesn't really move!

And it's not even got a saphire bearing!!!

And after shaking it furiously, no bubbles, so it aint even liquid filled!!

Enough moaning about it, just hit it with a hammer, at least then it will be of some use.

Do you think it's too small to get with a hatchet?

Look here, you have it all wrong. Mickey mouses ears are at NE and NW, in the middle is N and his neck is S. his hands are E and W, now you know how to orientate your toy compass.
