its clear to me that climbing in borrowdale is much better than llanberis pass. wondered what the general opinion is on this?

chris.

In reply to Gormenghast:

theres feck all bouldering in borrowdale and it always rains and its full of caravans. Llanberis pass had boulders as far as the eye can see and then a little bit further (like 2 miles at least)

On that basis Borrowdale would win hands down although my suggests otherwise.

In reply to Gormenghast: hmmm. good quality climbing to be had in both cases.

llanberis: nicer pub. slightly drier weather. slightly more climbing.

borrowdale: looks prettier. slightly warmer weather.

if anyone knows a decent pub that's closer to the climbing than Braithwaite (e.g. walking distance from crags and camping) please let me know!

Both knocked sideways by Langdale...
Hotbad Peteel 13 Jan 2006

I love borrowdale (used to live in cockermouth) but the pass has so much more quality climbing in it (also lived in llanberis for a few years)

In reply to Horse:

Yes - Eskdale (plus the Duddon of course...)
Hotbad Peteel 13 Jan 2006
In reply to pigeonjim:

The pass has a real imposing presence, borrowdale has a cafe and a lake

Hotbad Peteel 13 Jan 2006

In reply to Gormenghast: A53 Leek Road! Much better proposition with an abundance of crags just off the road to choose from and a classic bouldering venue just off the road too.
Hotbad Peteel 13 Jan 2006
In reply to chadz4:

A57. Most of the peak district and the mighty pex hill within spitting distance of that mighty road

In reply to Hotbad Peteel:

Aye but those crags r tiny. Big mountain crags r what we want
Hotbad Peteel 13 Jan 2006
In reply to pigeonjim:

No we don't, we want boulders and lots of them. Hmmm cromlech, pie shop, utopia the rest and the meadow versus the bowderstone, erm the bowderstone and erm the bowderstone again

In reply to Hotbad Peteel:

big mountain Crags. no we are talking. Proper exposure and pure fear.

In reply to Hotbad Peteel:

Eh did u read my first post? I prefer the pass
Hotbad Peteel 13 Jan 2006
In reply to pigeonjim:

No, I only read other peoples posts and reply at random.

In reply to Horse:

unlike big flat slabs of rock? hmmm not convinced. Anyway utopias too high to be considered bouldering. Almost needs a rope especially with the dodgy landing

Disagree...climbing is about doing it when and where you want ..

There are loads of 'top'places in the uk including the pass and Borrowdale..

But..lets not forget Gogarth, Bosigran , Skye, Tremadog..........

I could go on for 30 years........

Bottom line is Climb When you want ...and enjoy it.....
Hotbad Peteel 13 Jan 2006
In reply to Keith Roughley:

doesnt really fit in with the OP, none of them being borrowdale or the pass.anyway its all academic as borrowdale is beaten hands down by most of the places you mentioned too.

Dear Gormanghast

I think Llanberis is better for climbing than Borrowdale, However, neither would get into my Top 10 climbing venues in the UK.

I'm a lover of the lakes and yet wouldn't say Borrowdale is "better" than the Pass. Quality of climbing in the Pass is probably better, better lines etc.

Neither are my favourite places to climb though.

In reply to Hotbad Peteel:
You've obviously never been to Borrowdale - I'm regularly there, or passing through, over a few decades, and I've yet to see a caravan. There are no caravan sites in the valley.
 Simon Caldwell 16 Jan 2006
In reply to Gormenghast:
They're both OK, but too close to the road. If 'Llanberis Pass' is defined as extending as high up as Main Wall or even Gambit Climb, then the Pass is better.

I lived in Keswick for 23 years and climbed in Borrowdale for 10 years of that i love borrowdale the place is great it's a perfect place for the soul. I now live in Llanberis i have done for 2 years now the pass has a hell of a lot of great climbing and bouldering but it not as chilled to many people from outdoor centers thinking cos they have some pices of paper that they own the crag but in fact your really crap so sod off and go tie some knots some were. Also the welsh pubs are crap they don't know what real ale is. Don't get me wrong the pass is good but the lakes win's hands down.
