Chalk and the environment

Can somebody please explain to me why, exactly do some people regard the use of chalk environmentally damaging, forgive me for being a bit simple but im stuggling to work it out.

Used in acidic (ie grit areas) environments it alters the pH and kills the lichen etc. leaving pale streaks below well-used holds where the rock shows though.
