you could write to the company who made your trousers claiming to be a student doing some research at college and ask for a free sample - a mate of mine did that and they sent him enough to make a pair of trousers!

seattlefabrics.com if you can't find it locally.

I'm not aware of anywhere in the UK that will sell Gore-Tex to the public, due to Gore's strict licensing restrictions.

http://www.shelbykaava.com/catalog/default.php used to offer Paclite, but that seems to have disappeared.

http://www.justmakeit.com/fabrics/waterproof/index.html may have some, but they don't call it Gore-Tex.

http://www.pennineoutdoor.co.uk/Pennine_Fabrics.asp?sid=1 and http://www.pointnorth.co.uk have breathable waterproof fabrics, but neither sells an ePTFE membrane. Pennine's P42 fabric may suit.

the patches I used were useless this winter they delaminated after only a few uses. Luckily underneath I also used seam seal, which is far better IMHO

Use seam sealant as the gore tex patch won't breathe anyway (due to the glue).

good point never thought of that!
