there are also some 8's scattered around...

7a was a little harsh though

Yeah completely! There are loads of 7b+'s and a fair few 7c-8a as well!

I think they're implying that there are lots of mid to low grade routes, ie. lots of routes in the 6a - 7a bracket, as this is mid to low (for some people)

i'm sure they are. Though they did miss the important fact that most of the routes on sportland fall into the mid 7's range

No doubting there are but the advert does say "Portland is Britain's premier sport climbing area for mid to low grade sport routes (F6a -7a)" which it may be because there aren't many sport routes of that grade in the UK. If it had said "Portland is Britain's premier sport climbing area for (F6a - 8a)" it'd just be a lie as there are far better areas if you take into account routes 7b and above.
