There are nearer places to sheff than Almscliffe, and no, it's nowhere near as big.

What's wrong with Burbage? You'd probably find the grades at Almscliff a rather depressing experience...

i was told almscliff was the stanage of yorkshire. what's the best crag in yorkshire then?
 CJD 07 Jun 2006
In reply to Anonymous:

it's good I guess but to term it 'the stanage' of Yorkshire is a bit odd, in my opinion.

I'm not sure what's 'best' - there are such differences of character.

Given that the northern part of the edge forms the Yorkshire border, are the vertical bits in Yorkshire or Derbyshire?

Rubbish. Everyone knows that Calverley Quarry is the best crag in Yorkshire.

Dunno what grades you climb, but we went to Almscliff last autumn and it didn't really 'do it' for any of us...
And I hurt my shin.
Do you really want to go specifically out of the peak area, or are you just after somewhere different?

Then watch out for hillbillys, deliverance style, as you get hopelessly lost in the woods at the bottom...

Have a look in your Yorkshire Gritstone guide
TimS 07 Jun 2006
In reply to Anonymous: Almscliff could be said to be similar to Stanage, as it is the most popular grit crag in Yorkshire, and the first place most people head after rain. It is probably has about 1/20 the routes that stanage does (if that), and the ones in the lower grades are probably even more polished than their Stanage counterparts. There are some real classics in the E2-E5 range which have escaped the polish as yet.

For a more stanage like climbing experience i would suggest Crookrise.

If you've got the napalm, I've got the chainsaw
