Adjacent thread on Greenland has fired the imagination.

What might a solo trekker in summer do there?

This looks interesting: http://www.greenland.com/Travel_Info/Hiking_Guides/Pingo.php

was in Lappland last year, and 2nd half August there were very few. Might be same here. Main worry is river crossings - prime cause of death in Lappland. Cars left at trailhead - owners never come back.

Was in South Greenland last year for 4 weeks.

Mosquito's certainly were around (but not in great numbers), but none were present once you got higher up.

By far the biggest pest (ignoring the arctic fox that decided to have a "territorial battle" with us - well we did start it!!) was black fly. Even in light rain and winds the beggers would still come after you!!

The mosquito's typically attack under cover of the black fly, which can make them a problem outside the tent! But at least their distinctive flight pattern is easy to spot.

In reply to OP:
A solo treker can do a lot out there. Lots of good walks out there and huts that you can stay at. Sadly though, its not a cheap place at all!

From Nanortalik, there's a good ferry service (however, there is talk of this being replaced with a helicopter service) that will take you all over the place. It's also perfectly possible to hire local boats to ferry you over shorter distances.

BTW, Niels at the tourist office in Nanortalik is very very helpful.

Some bargain motors to be had in Northern Finland then?!
On the Greenland thing would; have thought that Spring time (touring skis) would be better on the basis that glacier travel would make getting about easier etc?

We climbed in the Torssukataq Spires, Cape Farewell in 2002. This is a very beautiful area, however when there isn't a breeze the black fly can be horrendous. I can't remember them bitting just getting everywhere. Mosquitos are the least of your worry. So take a headnet and a spare. We didn't tend to get bothered when climbing as the only tend to stay with the vegetation. A large tarp is also a godsend for a base camp as they don't seem to venture far into the shade.

Neils at Nanortalik, if he is still there, is excellent. Still need to write up the routes - there's plenty out there.
