In case of crevasse rescue what size of ice screw do you normally carry? (easy Alpine peaks)

(trying to save weight/bulk/cost - was thinking 160cm..? assuming only carrying one or two.)

In reply to MaxWilliam:
160cm I'd rekon thats a little on the short side. I'd go for a full body length screw.

In reply to Squirrel Bill: You should see his 20m ice axe.

In reply to MaxWilliam:
yeh I kinda notcied. I'm sorry but I have no clue to your question.
In reply to MaxWilliam: ON a slightly more serious grown up note. I would take as long as possible as theres a good chance you will be using it in snow/ice which is going to be alot softer than the ice on a dry glacier. If you are on a dry glacier then a 16mm would be fine. Theres less chance of using it on a dry glacier as you can usually see all the crevasses anyway (Assuming it's summer)

So a 160cm ice screw might be a good idea. I'd take a bloody long time to drive in though.
In reply to yesbutnobutyesbut: that should be 16cm

For crevasse rescue you may be better off with a snow stake, something like a 55cm Petzl Snowtube for example.

In reply to MaxWilliam: If I was only taking one screw I'd take a full size 22cm one, so I could also make Abalokov threads with it or use it for a retrievable ice screw abseil if needed. Wouldn't take a snow stake because if there was that much snow then you could bury your axe(s) or build a bollard.
