Depends if you want it for more for climbing or walking in winter. I think you can't go far wrong with the Montane Superfly XT. It's eVent so a little more breathable than XCR, but more importantly is a very good all rounder. Would suggest you try it on before you buy though. Here is the jacket anyway: http://www.montane.co.uk/productdetails.php?productid=55&rid=8

In reply to ken c: You do not need a gore XCR shell for scottish winter. they are not breathable enough. although they offer better rain protection. however, you arn't going to be winter climbing i nthe rain, so you are better of with a a softshell, which is snow and wind proof and much more breathable.

you should get a Rab VR trail top and a marmot precip jacket (or a montane firefly from R+R for £85) for 'full on' weather.

you will be much more comfortable most of the time in a softshell like the vr.

alternitvley, serch the forums under all messages for messages by Dave Hunter, Rock and run. for some other informed waterproof bashing.

If you must get a waterproof get eVent it is loads more breathable than gore.

In reply to ken c: my lowe alpine has been great and if you tend to tear your gear to buggery like me it was really easy to get repaired and not too expensive.

In reply to ken c: hi bill what kind of lowe alpine jacket do you have? is it gore tex or triple point, how breathable is it?
 Jon Wickham 11 Oct 2006
In reply to ken c: Companies bragging about Gore-tex XCR is just the marketing that all brands do. Yes, eVent is more breathable than XCR, but IMHO I don't think it will keep you totally dry. You will still probably experience some sweatiness in eVent (I certainly do) but it is less than in XCR. Yes I think soft shell is a very good idea for cold, dry environments but I think it is not always like that in Scotland. At least on the walk in, it is not uncommon to be in rain before you gain in altitude and it turns to snow; and even when you are on a route it could easily be raining or sleating. Though soft shells are very good, and very versatile, everyone needs a hard shell so you may as well invest in a decent one and use it when the conditions dictate that you need to. If it's cold enough then soft shell should exceed the performance of your hard shell, but I reckon it's not always cold enough in Scotland. Definitely check out psycho vertical though, some extremely good articles on there.

In reply to ken c: I'd go Paramo. They last forever, OK are heavy but they are waterproof, breathable, I'll never be without one.

In reply to ken c: thanks lads, now that i am totally confused!ive ordered a rab lofoten jacket, been informed that 'event'is more breathable than gore tex,and soft shell is better for cold dry conditions and gore tex is better for downpours, hopefully the rab jacket is an okay allrounder.
