Where are the major climbing areas in germany, and specifically is there much in the triangle between berlin, hannover and leipzig.

Many people wil tell you that the Frankenjura/ Fraenkische Schweiz area NE of Nuernberg is one of the best areas. Lots of small pocketed limestone crags.
In my humble opinion the only worth of the Frankenjura is as a waymarker to the Fichtelgebirge. Small semi bolted granite crags with amazing aretes and finger cracks that go for 25 metres at friend 1 size. Go there.

The Fränkische Schweiz is good, but unfortunately not in the area you specified. Elbsandstein is not to far from Leipzig. As far as the area you're talking about is concerned, you'll probably find the best climbing in the Thuringer Wald and, even better the Harz mountains - check out: http://www.cehceh.de/climb/harz/harz_de.html for details (some in English). www.softrock.de has load of links to different German and European climbing sites. Obviously mostly in German, but some in English as well, if your German's not up to it. Bear in mind the special rules regarding pro. for climbing in bits of the former GDR!

Mail me if you need anymore info.

Cheers
