I thought this sounded good and installed the software, but it seemed very buggy, was very slow and kept crashing. I gave up in the end.

Any ideas why this might be? I have a fairly high spec PC.

In reply to chris_s:

Yes I've had similar problems with it being buggy and slow. Also living in the Highlands my broadband connection speed leaves a lot to be desired when trying to log on to the server to download samples. Despite registering my email address, username and passwords I couldn't find anyway of logging on to the website to download the free GPS routes published by some of the outdoor magazines and to test out why they can lead people to walk over cliffs in zero visibility (BTW normal winter whiteout conditions in the Cairngorms and Scottish mountains)! I've now had several people on skills courses that have had near misses in the past using downloaded GPS routes. I think there should be a LARGE warning on the advertising on the software and GPS units to say that they are not a substitute for map reading and navigation skills and that fully reading the instructions and practising beforehand on a regular basis is essential.
Correct me if I am wrong but it's also very very expensive if all you want to do is download a few useful small sections of OS 1:25,000 or larger scale maps. Nothing is free...!
I assume if you buy the software it will work better?

In reply to Ron Walker: There were shed loads of MAJOR bugs in the newest version, but other than a few fairly minor redraw problems when using the 3d stuff, they all seem to be sorted. The software is free, BTW, it's only the maps you pay for. I'd recommend it now.

Ordnance Survey have tightened up on licensing arrangements though, your map license allows you to put the map onto 2 machines. If you buy online, you have to download on each machine, for a reinstall you'd have to download again.

What do you expect if you are a luddite who doesn't subscribe to the gospel according to the sainted Bill.

In reply to Paul Atkinson:

Just out of interest - how much are the maps to download? Can't seem to find this snippet of info anywhere. Wouldn't want to download the software just to find out.

In reply to tragically1969: Mee too, crashed the pc a couple of times without the program actually starting properly, uninstalled it.

Dear All,

We are sorry to hear that the new Anquet MapServer downloads have in some cases not met your expectations.

At Anquet we are keen to work with our customers and potential users to develop and improve our service. The recent software update 6.1.9 further improves the Anquet MapServer service. The update is available at www.anquetmapserver.co.uk. Choose “Download Anquet” to update your software. The update will not affect your maps and personal information – it will simply update your Anquet v06 software.

Regarding Anquet and using Macintosh computers – it is unlikely the software will be developed for the Mac OS due to the cost implications of doing this. With the increasing prevalence of Boot Camp we believe that Anquet software will soon be accessible to Mac users.

@stooby – As well as the Anquet software (which includes walking tools such as route planning tools) being free to download and use – Getmapping 10m aerial photography and a Phillips Overview map of GB are free to download from the Anquet MapServer. Specialist mapping like Ordnance Survey mapping and high-resolution photography are priced on a sliding scale. The entry price for Ordnance Survey digital maps on the Anquet MapServer is £10 and that will buy you a large area e.g. Devon or Greater London on 1:50,000 scale.

We want you to enjoy using the Anquet software. If any problems are experienced in either the installation or use of Anquet maps please feel free to contact us at support@anquet.co.uk and our dedicated technical team will be able to help with these issues.

Regards,

Anquet
