Ellis was the first proper climbing shop dealing mainly for climbers.

In reply to thesiaus: if you join there climbing club which you can do on their website and is free, you get 10% off all climbing gear....

which isnt overpriced and is good....

Thanks for the advise.

Its the only place that seems to stock the bag I want online in the right colour, and size, but more importantly colour.

Used to be a Manchester cobblers. Specialised in climbing after Whillans et al got their boots hob-nailed there.

there's an Ellis Brigham discount store in Capel Curig which I managed to pick up a few odds and ends at. Otherwise, theres much cheaper and much better places out there.

If the online store is similar to the actual shops (the Covent Garden one at least) I would avoid it like the plague. They are over-priced and shockingly bad at customer service. Tonnes of staff but if you approach them they will run a mile in case you ask them anything awkward
In reply to welshdragon: I think that chip on your shoulder is starting to get very big! As with all large stores they have sme good staff and some not so good ones. As does the shop you work in.

In reply to welshdragon: Well I found them very helpful. I had bought an Arterix (sp?) jacket in the states and the stitching started to go. I saw that Ellis Brigham were a supplier so I took it to them. They delt with Arcterix for me and got me a replacement jacket.

So they spent what ended up as quite a bit of time sorting it out for me and I didn't get charged a penny.

I have found that if you have an difficult question they were good at getting the person instore that knew the most about the subject to help you.

Sounds like you went into a different shop.

There kit is usually more expensive, but that usually is because they stock the more expensive stuff.

Just watch out for the returns policy. IE - make sure it's exactly what you want, as they don't accept returns unless it's faulty or damaged.

In reply to thesiaus: Ellis Brigham were for along time and may still be the biggest UK climbing / walking / skiing retailer, certainly in terms of shops. In my view prices are similar to other chains although they are less willing to give discounts. They have for a long time been very interested in skiing and certainly in the Manchester stores this seems to have edged out some of the climbing equipment, probably more profit in ski gear. Like any chain staffing can be hit and miss.

I'd generally try and shop elsewhere before Ellis Brigham & Tisos. Tend to be a bit expensive and won't give discount.
