Was this an onsight attempt?

Speedy recovery wished.

Note:E8 surely!?
 Chris Fryer 12 Sep 2002
In reply to Adam Lincoln: You have got to feel sorry for the guy, but at the mean time be mildly amused. I'm not surprised he feels embarassed.
johncoxmysteriously 12 Sep 2002
In reply to Adam Lincoln:

What is it with that fall? It's a blooming long way on to a not-very-good landing, yet people don't seem to sustain half the injuries you'd think they would (Julian Lines walked away, apparently).

Not that a broken heel's much fun.

In reply to johncoxmysteriously:

Who was spotting him, John Whately?
 Paz 12 Sep 2002
In reply to Dave Garnett:

Wasn't it way hot and sweaty last weekend? Pretty hardcore.
OP Adam Lincoln 12 Sep 2002
In reply to Paz:

Apparantly not, End Of The Affair saw an ascent too
Ian Hill 12 Sep 2002
In reply to Paz: Obsession isn't really a pulling on slopers issue more about good footwork so hot days aren't too much of a problem...
 Paz 12 Sep 2002
In reply to Ian Hill:

I'll take your word for it but I grimace at the thought of that palm down move.
Ian Hill 12 Sep 2002
In reply to Paz: don't palm down...just lay your hands there and keep walking up the rock
 Michael Ryan 12 Sep 2002
In reply to Adam Lincoln:

I don't believe it Adam....Kevin is invincible and made of rubber.

Tell him to get back to Bishop soon. It's cooling down, the hot pool therapy will be great for his break and I'll look after him.

I can also sympathise with the guy, having broken my heal 4 years ago falling from the top crux move of Marrowbone Jelly (Caley). It's certainly not a pleasant injury. Unfortunately my ankle also fused (possibly a result of the operation and metal work)and so I still only have up and down movement. Hope he has more luck and back on the rock soon!!

 Andy Farnell 13 Sep 2002
In reply to Jim Higgins: Did mine from the top of Slip'n'Slide.

Got about 85% movement back, but it still aches at times, and that was 5 years ago.

Hurt's doesn't it

Kevin Thaw...

Perhaps the most talented all-round climber on earth.

Is there any one else who is so bad ass on a skateboard, headpointing grit, ice, alpine, sport, trad, big wall., getting up late, smoking da weed, dancing to hardcore techno......and also a very nice chap......etc

I can't think of anyone.

In reply to ian parnell:

Yikes. Respect to the man for trying. I always thought OF might be the first grit E8 to get on-sighted (without getting downgraded afterwards!) but this episode isn't selling it as a good one to try. Or is any publicity good publicity?

I'm still curious about how people manage to walk away (OK, stagger away) from this fall. Are we talking bouncy castles and the usual headpointing paraphernalia? Luck? Alf Bridge-like skill? Heroic spotting?
sean smith 14 Sep 2002
In reply to Adam Lincoln:
in the news bulletin on this website, obsession is given E7 6c, has it been downgraded?
 mark s 14 Sep 2002
In reply to sean smith: e8 6b i didn't think it was hard enough for 6c.but def worth e8 ,to just break an ankle is lucky
Chris@Rockfax 14 Sep 2002
kevin's like a cat. most people who've climbed with him for any time can tell stories of his ability to adjust in the air and fall in ways that allow him to land in control (often involving jumping off things on the way down a la Jackie Chan).

even with the horrific nature of the fall it's more of a shock to me that he WAS injured than it would have been had he walked away from it.

heal well kevin.

well is it E8 or E7?

 StuartM 16 Sep 2002
In reply to mark s: i've always felt E7 6c was fair - hard E7, soft 6c - as for Adams comment about "E8 surely" because of the broken ankle - its meant to hurt when you lob off an E7 Adam................

In reply to StuartM:

I banged my knee very badly, in fact I was nearly in tears, aged 25, on Crib Goch, and that's graded Easy.

Honest!

We now have before and after photos. Actually, I'm a bit suspicious to see the camera man who is currently film Mr Leo Holding for 'Extreme Lives' in one of them. Perhaps its just a publicity stunt for Kevin?
