x Topic - European cragging: trains instead of flying?

x by - Nick Smith - UKC ? on - 08 Oct 2007 - Climbers.net
Who has tried using trains to get (close) to European crags instead of flying? Flying is becoming more and more tedious with long queues and endless security checks, and of course it is much less environmentally friendly than using trains.

I was thinking of taking the train from Sheffield to Fontainebleau, hiring a car locally for a week, then taking the train down into Spain and again hiring a car for a couple of weeks of sport climbing.

Is that practical? How long do the trains take, and can you recommend any good websites for prices/timetables?

Many thanks for any advice
