Has anyone been climbing in Madeira? Im going soon and was wondering whether to take my gear!

I have searched google already but the results were not of much use!

Cheers

I'm pretty sure (but don't quote me on it) there a lot of large cliffs of choss.

Plenty of walking up hills though.

Have fun.

It's a great place and there is some spectacular walking but unfortunately the place seems to be mostly volcanic choss.

For a more detailed response see my reply to this post:

Have fun but don't expect to climb much.

Great place. The coastal walk along the north coast (cannot remember the name - post if you want it and I'll look up) is really superb.

Leave your rack at home.

Might be worth throwing in boot & chalk bag.

A DH rig would be a much more productive thing to take.....

The hi level walking is great and the scenery quite amazing. Some of the levadas (off the beaten track and in poor repair) can be pretty necky in places.

We really liked the north coast much more than the south coast around Funchal.

And keep away from the crinklies!

And I've never had a hire car in first gear more time than we did on the crazy Madeiran roads. Watch out for the locals, they drive by a different set of rules to sane people .....
