The Beacon will shortly start running the new Climbing Wall Award (CWA) training & assessment courses aimed at those wishing to supervise groups on indoor & outdoor climbing walls.

This long awaited, and some would say controversial, award will be administered by the MLTB's and will fill a gap for those people needing a nationally recognised award but without the outdoor climbing experience to go for the SPA.

The 2 day training courses will be run at the Beacon Climbing Centre (at a cost of £110 non-residential) and will cover aspects such as group management, running safe & fun sessions at climbing walls, coaching of movement skills and group abseiling. The assessment is a further 1 day course and costs £75.

In reply to Steve Mayers:

It has been pointed out to me that I should have made it clear that this award is not only aimed at climbers without the relevant outdoor climbing experience for the SPA but should also attract experienced climbers without the need for an 'outdoor' qualification.

Although the SPA obviously allows you to supervise both on climbing walls and natural crags it is undoubtedly true that the 2 day training course for the CWA should have lots more time to look at group management at walls, coaching of movement skills and other climbing wall related issues and so some experienced climbers might see it as a more useful progression than the SPA.
