Topic - Running watch: Garmin Forerunner 50 ?

I'm trying to be more scientific about my running (to date I've only had 1 pace for my running - flat out! so I do all my training runs at 'race pace' :(
Any advice on a good watch that will give a pace/speed reading, with an alarm if I leave the target pace zone? I've looked at a few GPS-based watches, but it sounds like the GPS can take a while to get a signal, and a cheaper watch with a foot-pod might give a better real-time indication of pace?
The Garmin Forerunner 50 with foot pod & HRM looks good. Anyone got one?
Thanks
