Clicked on a Rockfax link to the new guidebook and it looks so cool! Anyone been? How expensive is it to organise a trip there? What is the cheapest way of doing it? When is a good time of year? Won't be this year but I can dream!!!

A detailed report would be good!! Want to know how much stuff costs (like food and accomm), how easy it is to get around, all that sort of thing. I'm not jealous or anything btw (she says turning a delicate shade of green)

Hope you have fun!

I have been the last four summers and off again in two weeks.

Cheapest - I guess you could do two weeks for about £400.

"Cheapest" way is to fly - sub £250 return.

Best time to go is when the Arctic high pressure is established!

Nowhere like it -

Food wont be cheap - eating out especially will be expensive (as will drinking out).

Thats my experience of Norway anyway.

In reply to Flicka: I went with a group of friends 2 years ago. We flew to Oslo, then took the train all the way up to Bodo, then the ferry to the west end of the islands, then a bus, then a taxi, to the campsite below Gandalfvegen. That worked out quite cheap and was an adventure. If I went again I'd be tempted to fly all the way though. Camping is free. Fishing is free. Climbing is ace, unless it rains...

Living expenses: reckon on about double UK prices and you won't be far out.

Time to go is middle of the year: the near 24 hour light means that you can climb whenever a weather window presents itself. It can still be cold, though - we got a few flurries of sleat in July.

Hi Siobhan,

Where did you get that rate for the flights? Do you recommend any company in particular?

In reply to Flicka: Food and drink expensive on the islands when I went in 2002. I flew to Kristiansund on the west coast via Oslo and met a mate there and then drove - it was the longest most tedious drive ever and the thought of having to drive back again put a bit of a blight on the trip - great place though.

been twice.. 1st time very cheaply:
http://www.ukclimbing.com/forums/t.php?t=23104#x308721

second time we drove which had the advantage that we took shed loads of asda value stuff and only spent about an extra 50 quid on food beyond our 100 pound asda shop for 6 weeks.

ferry newcastle across is about 400-500 quid
drive north takes about 2 days (1000 miles) at UK or less now? fuel prices.
plus tolls

so car i think is only worth it is you are there fro more than a month.

Rema 1000 is the cheapest supermarket to shop at.. bread for less than 50p

For driving to Lofoton, I'd suggest getting to Sweden and then driving though it rather than Norway. Better, wider roads and a lot less steep hills/tunnels/ferries to worry about.

In reply to Mattyk:

Hey Matty,

what routes did you get done 2nd time around that you didn't back in '02? Looks like you're climbing much harder now. Any route recommendations?

I'm very keen to go back and do WestPillaren still, hmm maybe next year. I just don't think we can be as lucky with the weather as in 02. What was like this time?

Hi, flying with SAS from Bristol to oslo... £29 each way, then norwegian air from oslo to bodo... around £130 rtn, then flight from bodo to svolvaer is £30 each way or can catch ferry which is cheaper i think. Booked a while back and def worth it as flights get more expensive.
Hoping to camp for free and so only outgoing will be bus around Lofoten and food, which is about double uk prices. Staying alcohol free!!!
