The Northumberland Mountaineering Club have arranged to have the trees at one end of this iconic crag felled.

The work will take place on the 'Dark Side' of Back Bowden Doors (Cockenheugh) over the weekend of the 16th August, barring any complications.

In reply to Jack Geldard - Editor - UKC: Ah! Someone else knows about Cockenheugh, which is a Dovehole like collection of big sandy pinnacles about a miles lash through the woods north of BBD.

It'll be nice to get the sun back there after all these years, not that I can do any of the bloody routes.

In reply to Colin Matheson:
<nerd> Cockenheugh is the crag consisting largely of pinnacles, near Cuthberts Cave (GR NU 061347). Colour Heugh is the crag consisting largely of undergraded VDiffs and stupid extremes, near which some trees are to be felled (NU 065336). </nerd>

But you knew that didn't you, you being an orienteer of some renown
In reply to JDal:

Just to say many thanks to the NMC for arranging this. The BMC has been happy to agree financial support for this project.

In reply to Jack Geldard - Editor - UKC:
Thanks for the help from the BMC. It may be helpful to know that in Easter 2009 there is a major orienteering event taking place in the area that will include Kyloe In and Back Bowden Doors, Cockenheugh and other hidden gems. The area has recently been totally re-mapped but looks like there will be a small change already. Every boulder over 1 m high and every crag over 1 m high has been mapped. I know the area very well and unfortunately there is not another Kyloe In waiting to be exploited.
If anyone wants a quiet weekend next Easter Kyloe or back Bowden is not the place to be. Details of the orienteering are on www.jk2009.org.uk

Have bushwhacked around those parts in search of boulderings answer to the holy grail, alas a fruitless search, looks inviting but the rocks have the consistantcy of the finest short bread.

In reply to Conquistador of the usless:
Indeed, Cockenheugh is very sandy. Steve Blake has done some stuff in a cave there and commented that it looked a good low grade venue. However, if you were lucky enough to buy half a gallon of Focus own brand stabiliser when they had it, it's now a venue with potential for some quality stuff. For owners of the stabiliser that is

You would be amazed at how much new bouldering is being developed in the county now, or maybe you know already.
