So, I'm off. Just for the 12-months mind you, but off to New Zealand all the same. What a terrible bit of luck...

So, anyone know of any easily accessible ice/winter climbing in New Zealand?

Regards

Well you're going just as spring is arriving down under.

Tons of the stuff to go at, but you'll have to treck inland to the mountains, south island better than north island.
Ask the locals when you get there.
Again depends on where you'll base yourself.

I went there years ago to visit a friend, stayed on south island and got some good sking in during July. did a bit of walking but no climbing.

In reply to Rampikino: Any chance of being more specific? Where abouts?
The majority of shorter water ice or scottish style stuff climbed is in Remarkables/ Wye creek near Queenstown, or Bush Stream near Mount Cook village, as well as craters of volcanoes up north (know less about this). However there is heaps more about. Fiordland has spectacular climbing, but far more serious and fickle. Alpine routes are there year round and throughout the southern alps. Would not call much of it easily accesible compared to Europe/Scotland though.

If money levels are OK, there are alot of ice fall/winter alpine routes that you can access via Heli in the Aspiring range. Have to agree with another post, Wye Creek is good for ice/mixed. If you ski then you can tour over the top of double cone (Remarkables ski area) into the creek.

At the back of Treble Cone ski area, Wanaka, there's Blue Creek and a few longer pitched ice routes on Black Peak and around there. Pretty good!

Have a good time!
