Hello everybody, I'm new to this site, but I have been watching for a while.
Could somebody, anybody, tell me if there is any ice climbing to be had on Kinder Downfall (it's a waterfall on the North side of Kinder Scout Plateau). It's a very strange place in that during the summer it dries up but in spring, when there is a strong wind blowing up the valley, the downfall blows back to the top - Kinder Upfall if you will hehe.
Anyhow I digress, so please, is there? Also if there is, how do we get to find out if there is ice formed? Will some kind soul on this wonderful forum post a link?
I thank you in advance - Joe

In reply to Anonymous: Kinder Downfall is currently in excellent nick
I was up there yesterday at midday. Altough the ground was frozen solid and did not thaw throughout the day, the ice on the downfall was most certainly not in winter nick just yet (i.e. it was not an icefall, merely a stream with a few icicles. These yould be much to fragile to climb. mabye if it stays cold tough...
nice old photo, the downfall usually takes a week or ten days of freezing temperatures to get any where near it. Of course there are other venues in the Dark Perak that get less sun and get better sooner!
In reply to Anonymous: No no it never forms I would suggest that nobody goes up there and that this thread stops.
Apparently there are ghosts up there and its a horrible place. Oh no you wouldn't want to go up there.
First rule of Kinder Downfal club.....zip it!

Has anyone been up today / yesterday and what is it looking like. Had a hunch it was in nick last year and it was. Check my photos.
Believe it or not, I've had a communication from a trusted source who's just taken his blackberry for a walk up the Kinder river and he sent me a picture of a very dry Downfall from when he was stood below it this afternoon. Nowhere near ready.
The mixed faces of Mam Tor will be in fine nick by the weekend though.
