A worthy winner. I really liked it and I don't boulder much and rarely enjoy bouldering films. But it wasn't really about bouldering. 5 minute of film that beautifully illustrates the lunatic obsessive nature of climbing.

In reply to Mick Ryan - UKClimbing.com: Nice one guys! I loved some of these - especially the Paul Williams one, really good.

And yes, the winner was great, I thought it was really funny, the staged 'wrong problem' thing was hilarious.

I have yet to make a video, perhaps I should try. Any free software for Windows out there? (Please no Mac evangelists, I get enough of that from Mick and Alan! ;-] )

In reply to Jack Geldard - Editor - UKC: You can only make good videos on Macs its been proven in tests. I believe the Paul Williams vid was made on a PC which just let it down a bit.....
 Jack Geldard 11 Dec 2008
In reply to Alastair Lee: Good work on the judging Al, some top entries in there. There was one with some guys on a really small boulder problem, trying to mantle it - made me laugh, really funny.

In reply to Mick Ryan - UKClimbing.com: Well done to all involved, really enjoyed most of the entries.
 Alastair Lee 11 Dec 2008
In reply to neil.....34: Get away - the first thing they do on any film making course is a live detonation of a PC, preferably with an effigy of Bill Gates on it.

So alister with your trusty mac, I love your work by the way, but when are you going to make a long awated font film, Its about time someone did.

For me it had this ethereal quality....nosatalgic, looking back to childhood memories. I also loved the continual movement. I like that in bouldering - well the way I do it sometimes

The total ambience, film and music, was very Boards of Canada, like an old American nature film from the 70's.....with a hint of 70's porno, think Vampyros Lesbos. I'm a big fan of retro synth keyboard, Moog hopefully. I found it very peaceful and retro - loved the super 8 film effect.

Track is Burn Out by The Cinematic Orchestra so Dave tells me.

I found it quite beautiful.

Would love to see it projected big.

Congrats Keith, not just for the award winning clip but for the L'etranger video, which is far and away the best and most viewed climbing vid on Vimeo and shows what passion, vision, talent and dedication you have. As a pro editor and HV20 climbing-shooter myself I would be curious to know what your workflow was - codecs, effects, other geeky stuff - again congrats and thanks for the inspiration.
In reply to jghedge: have to agree the l'etranger video is definately one of the best climbing films i have seen. totally fills you full of psyche.

Cheers
Tim

To all that liked the l'etranger video,

I dam not sure Keith would do such a blatent plug, so just in case, I will.

If you liked it why don't you leave a comment on his blog, or even donate a pound or 2 to show your appreciation (donate button on the right hand side of this web page http://www.unclesomebody.com/blog/?p=39 )

Well done to the winners.

>"Notable mentions"

It was my personal favorite but how come "Horror Arete" got two notable mentions?

And do notable mentions get a UKC T-shirt or did I just make that up?

Well done Keith, and congratulations. A very worthy winner.

I am delighted to have come second, but the best prize has been everyone's encouraging comments. I've learned a lot too. Sometimes the best bit really is in the taking part.

Hi Alastair. That's not right. My film was 100% made on a MAC.

Don't blame the tools; blame inexperience. That clip was from a very early version of my film and my skills and knowledge have come on a lot since then. That's been one of the numerous positive things about this whole project, and I'd like to thank Mick for organising it.

Oh, yes. There were a couple downstairs and one in a bag in the hall. I did try to isolate the Mac by keeping it in the bedroom but there are more PCs than Macs in the house so I expect that's what made the difference.

In reply to AlisonS: Thought so - keep trying though

I believe the original condition was 'spot prize for all entries', is this still the case? :P

Congrats to the winners.

Is a spot better than a T-shirt then? There must be some of those "On Sight" T-shirts kicking about...

In reply to Mick Ryan - UKClimbing.com:

Thanks for all the kind comments and apologies for taking so long to respond!

This is is going to be a hardcore nerd post so you are forewarned. I'll try to answer the questions, but apologies if I forget something.

I filmed everything with my trusty HV20, edited it all on a PC (see below) using a combination of Sony Vegas and Adobe After Effects. I encoded my film and the clip with x264 at a bitrate of around 5000Mbps. The reason I have a PC is because it will outperform any mac that costs under £2800 and it cost me £750. For those you who care, it's a quad core Intel machine running at 4.3GHz. I warned you, NERDY!

I certainly learned a lot making my film, and I want to say a special thanks to Alastair who gave me a good push in the right direction when it comes to editing. I'm on a permanent learning curve in video editing and in climbing, so thanks to the people who helped in both fields.

The music is indeed The Clash.

Thanks to UKC, the judges, and the prize givers. Ciao!
