Hi.

I'm assuming this is the right forum for this one. I'm wondering if there is any book, or other written account, about Charlie Porter's 1975 solo of Mt Asgard. The best I've turned up on Google is an American Alpine Journal report of the 2001 second ascent, I'm surprised I can't find more. I just finished Andy Kirkpatrick's "Psychovertical" and I was probably hoping for a similar account of Porter's climb. There must be something?

Thanks

Andrew

Hi Mr Kirkpatrick here. I've never been able to track anything down about this - or his solo of the Cassin, but he's a real hero of mine.

last month in chile the boat captain told us he was good freinds with Charlie, who now sails around Patagonia/south atlantic, so maybe you can google him?

Good luck

Hi Andy.

Yes I did see a few mentions of his new life as a sea skipper. I guess he didn't write much about his climbing. Sounds like a real character though.

But while you're on: if it's not too much to ask, could you go up to Baffin and repeat the route, and then write a book about it? I think that would be exactly what I'm after!

Cheers

Most recent: http://www.earth.ox.ac.uk/~chrisd/mdds08/

Charlie has been running his yacht Gondwana around the fjords etc for years. A friend meets him sometimes in Puerto Williams.

He also provided the transport for the 1994 2A of Sarmiento, by Venables, Roskelley etc.

Very briefly, what DO you know about the Porter solo on Asgard? Was it pretty futuristic?

In reply to Jamie Bankhead: I seem to remember he started the route with 3 others - then they quit and he carried on solo, and ended up nearly starving on the walk out. The route got a push (maybe one day) a few years ago.

There is a (very) brief report on p467 of the following book preview:

http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=HkalBpP35cQC

There is a much fuller report of the second ascent on p126 on the following:

http://books.google.com/books?id=E50bIVG3Q5QC

These are the best I've found.

In reply to kidcobol: see Climbing (edn 174 - March 15 1998). Baffin Island foldout guide and an article by Mark Synnot. Mentions that Porter didn't report his route, write an article or named rated or drew a topo!
