Leeds wall footwear rules

We were asked to stop bouldering at Leeds wall today because 2 of us were wearing 5 ten Tennies. The manager said that street shoes damage the small screw on holds that they use. I was unconvinced about the validity of this idea and it would cause a problem as I always climb in Tennies as I find climbing shoes too painful for an arthritic toe I have.
What do people think?

They don't want you walking in off the street and using the same trainers that you stood in crusty white dog eggs a minute beforehand. Makes sense to me. I don't think your trainers would damage the holds, no.

I regularly climb in tennies and I can't say I see the problem.

No, like I said the issue was with damaging hold.

In reply to Rat know-all: I climbed in approach shoes on Saturday at City Bloc as I forgot my climbing boots. The guys there didn't mind at all.

There's much more bouldering there anyway. It's huge.

This is really out of order!
People climbing (in rock shoes) on the holds wears them out anyway!
Seems a bit eliteist and stupid to me...
