Achillies tendon injury

I've suddenly, and seemingly for no reason developed a pain at the back of my heal, where I would guess the achillies tendon joins the bone. Its not constant but if strighten my leg and bend my foot back (such as when doing a calf stretch) it hurts. A lot!

I'm not a runner but have been jumping off indoor bouldering walls a fair bit lately. I don't remember doing anything particular to cause the injury but about 6 weeks before it appeared I did sprain my ankle. Does anyone have any knowledge of achillies injuries they want to share, are they the sort of thing that responds to physio or is rest the only option? Thanks

In reply to Tyler: Well i completely ruptured mine and can say with Knowledge that it hurt!! Had to have surgery and then was in Plaster from the end of April til Start of July followed by not being able to do much but Physio, then took ages to get the confidence to run etc on it.
If its a slight tear i'd take it easy for 6 weeks cutting out high impact stuff. Then start stretching the muscles and tendons by holding on the back of a chair and squating down. But i'd go and see a specialist who can tell you more about your injury, as i've sold my sports injury book now!!

In reply to Tyler:

has your achillies become inflamed at all? compare it to your other one in the mirror!

does it hurt more in the morning after its been rested and eases up later in the day??

In reply to all:

Thanks all! I don't think it's ruptured, I'm guessing that's permanently painful and would make me walk with a limp.

Outwardly it appears the same as the other (maybe a bit reder but that's it)

No, it only hurts when stretched but when it does it really hurts,

In reply to Tyler:

Don't jump off the wall and don't shock load it. KEEP HYDRATED, mine, and three others operated on one hot August day were discussed amongst us and everyone had been doing sports and not drinking any fluids.

5-6 months to start using seriously if the knicker elastic snaps. Tried after 4 months on step ladders and had to have another month off.

See the doc about it and get good information as to how to treat yours. a month resting it is better than having total failure.

In reply to Tyler:

You really ought to see a physio. You don't want to wait till the problem becomes chronic.

They can take a long time to get better as the blood supply isn't great to the area.

The symptoms you describe wouldn't be an indicator of classic Achilles tendonosis but I'm not a physio and I haven't examined you.

I did however suffer from Achilles problems for a long time.

Do yourself a favour and get proper advice.

You have my sympathy.

>Exactly....your guessing. I didn't realise it was that troublesome when you mentioned it on Sunday.

My brother snapped his achilles in a tackle at his stag doo, walked on it for 2 weeks thinking it was just a sprain then saw a specialist who had him in the next day. It was a difficult procedure as the tendon had "recoiled" so much, apparently exasperated because he left it so long. He was then in a full leg cast for 10 weeks.

Get it checked man.
