I'll be passing through norhtern Germany on my way to Frankenjura in May/June, and would like to stop somewhere for a while to stagger the journey. Any recommended areas? Have read about a place called Ith. Anybody been there? Any good? I'm after sports climbing and bouldering.

Thanx, M.

See www.kletternimnorden.de or www.derklemmkeil.de

Between Göttingen and Hannover you have sandstone, granite and limestone. Overall around 6000 routes within one hour driving!

Used to go there years ago (late 80's). Wouldn't have described it as sport climbing - more trad with some big ring bolts. Might have changed though. Very scenic, nice climbing, bar/restaurant and camp site at top. Good climbing - sort of 'limestone meets gritstone' outcrops.

Most things are bolted, but depending of your courage you will find some wires useful especially in the easier grades. From french 6a and up only draws are needed for 90% of the routes!
