you can buy adjustable footloops which are adjusted with a buckle as shown in this photo http://neoutdoor.co.uk/popup_image.php?pID=3670&image=0

but there is a knot you can tie to make an adjustable footloop, so the knot is basically used instead of the buckle.. it looks and works like a prusik knot in that it locks off when you stand in it. it locks off just enough so when you stand in the footloop it doesnt slide but then it can easily be adjusted by hand to change the legth of the footloop..

i used to be able to tie this knot ages ago but i cant work out how to tie it now,, does anyone else know what i am talking about and know how to tie it????

Well done, now some other uses for it.

Use as guyline runner on tent

Use as adjustable cows tail, tie a stopper knot on the end of the main rope so it cannot slide off the end

Tie it on a rescue rope for cragfast people. leave the loop large so they can slip it over themselves and snug it up tight enough for safety.

Or Google up a 'Purcell prusik' which gives you an adjustable loop.

In reply to Nicos: Have you tried a Blake knot/hitch? A lot of rope access techs use it for footloops.
